MPC X Session: Akai Mini D, Jura, and Casio SA-46
Exploring Retro-Inspired Sounds with Akai’s MPC X SE
When inspiration strikes, it can come from the most unexpected places. For this session, my starting point was none other than a simple bass line played on my son’s Casio SA-46. From there, I built a full track using Akai’s MPC X SE, an instrument that perfectly bridges the worlds of retro vibes and modern production power.
Watch the video below:
Starting with a Simple Idea
Every song begins with a spark. For this track, the spark came from tinkering with the Casio SA-46—a tiny, simple keyboard packed with charm.
Its limitations can be a strength, forcing you to focus on melody and rhythm. That’s how I stumbled upon the bass line that became the backbone of this session.
To take the idea further, I recreated the bass sequence using Akai’s Mini D plugin. This powerhouse of a virtual synth brings the warmth and grit of classic analog bass to a digital playground, adding depth and character to the track.
Adding Texture with JURA
No track is complete without texture and atmosphere. Enter the JURA plugin, which brought lush bells and dreamy arpeggios to the composition.
JURA’s rich sound palette, inspired by vintage synths, made it the perfect choice to elevate the track with shimmering layers and a sense of space.
The MPC X SE Workflow
One of the joys of working on the MPC X SE is its seamless workflow. Everything—from sequencing to sound design and mixing—was handled directly on the device.
The MPC X is more than a sampler; it’s a full-fledged production studio that allows you to stay in the creative zone without external distractions.
While the MPC X handled all the heavy lifting, my Prophet 10 made an appearance as a MIDI controller, offering a tactile, hands-on approach to performance and recording.
The Result
The end result is a track that balances retro charm with modern production. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the simplest ideas can lead to rich and rewarding creations.

What’s Next?
This might not be the end for this track. If inspiration strikes again, I’ll revisit it in a future session, adding more depth and polish. For now, though, I’m happy with where this journey has taken me.
